The canal system linking Maida Vale to the Thames was completed in the early 19th Century. From the 1820's development commenced along the Edgware Road.
In plans requested by the Bishop of London in 1827 the layout of roads which would be recognised as Maida Vale were first designed and building took place over the next 80 years.
Warrington Crescent was built in 1861 including the Warrington Hotel and this was quickly followed by the building of The Prince Alfred, Formosa St in 1862 and the Lord Elgin in 1863.
Around this time the name Maida Vale was being used for the stretch of the Edgware Road and in 1868 it was formally adopted for the stretch from Maida Hill to Kilburn Park Road
