Wartime

During the First World War the Bakerloo line, the name derived from the original line which ran from Baker Street to Waterloo, was extended to Maida Vale.

The station itself was opened in June 1915 just in time to become an air raid shelter!

In March 1918 an air raid over London resulted in a 2000lb bomb landing in Warrington Crescent demolishing 5 houses. The change in housing type caused by the bombing is still evident today.

During the Second World War there was, of course, much more damage to London and examples of where damage was caused can be seen in many locations in Maida Vale.
